FAU Maps: A wealth of knowledge in AI and energy and climate
The 21st century poses considerable challenges to mankind, and science has a major role to play in mastering them. Researchers at FAU also have a valuable contribution to make. The University has now launched two Maps focussing on its expertise in two areas which are particularly important for society: the AI Map at www.ki.fau.de and the Energy and Climate Map at www.energie-klima.fau.de.
FAU has traditionally been strong in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and pattern recognition. One of first chairs in this area was opened as early as 1975. Since then, a number of other focus areas in artificial intelligence have become established in research at FAU. Currently, more than 60 chairs and professors are working on important AI topics, including fundamental mathematics, algorithms, calculations for embedded systems and data security. The scientists are researching both AI applications in the areas of medicine, production and digital humanities as well as interdisciplinary issues such as ethics of AI.
At the UN Climate Action Summit in September 2019 in New York, Germany pledged to become climate neutral by 2050. FAU has set itself the goal of developing technologies and management processes which will allow this ambitious target to be met more rapidly. The University has unique expertise in the area of energy research. Scientists are working across the faculties to develop innovative methods and processes for an integrated energy system, for example in the areas of photovoltaics and hydrogen economy, geothermal systems, e-mobility, materials research and energy systems analysis. The hub for this interdisciplinary research is Energie Campus Nürnberg.
