FAU has secured its place as leading innovator in Germany and climbed up to 14th place among the world’s most innovative universities. FAU has achieved the top position in Germany for the fifth time running along with its third consecutive position in the top 5 in Europe and the first time for the University in the world’s top 15.

In the World’s Most Innovative Universities 2019, Reuters places FAU among the top 15 international universities. FAU congratulates its partners at Stanford, MIT and Harvard in achieving the leading position overall. In Europe, FAU is joined in the top 5 by KU Leuven, Imperial College London, EPFL in Lausanne and the University of Cambridge.

FAU’s strength in patents, successful partnership strategy and high visibility in international research make the University the most innovative in Germany. FAU works with its international partners in complex research projects and promotes regular exchange in teaching and knowledge transfer. ‘Collaborating with the best universities at an international level is key to our strength in innovation,’ emphasises FAU President Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger.

The ranking by the US-Canadian media concern Reuters measures innovation on the basis of ten different factors including the number of publications, patent applications and collaborations with industry. It recognises the impact of a university in elevating innovation and progress while creating value in the economy and society. FAU collaborates with major international companies such as Siemens, Schaeffler and adidas to explore megatrends in renewable energies, health innovation, medical engineering and future materials.
