Curriculum vitae
After completing his master craftsman examination in bakery and gaining professional experience, Friedrich Sommer studied Business Administration (“Diplom-Kaufmann”, 2008), earned his doctorate (2012), and qualified as a postdoctoral researcher (“Habilitation”, 2016) at the University of Münster. By invitation of Prof. Kristy Towry, he spent a semester as a Visiting Scholar at Emory University (Atlanta, USA) in 2014.
From 2016 to 2025, he served as a full professor in management accounting and control at the University of Bayreuth. He also acted as the Academic Dean (“Studiendekan”) of the Faculty of Law, Business and Economics from 2018 to 2023. In 2022, he declined an offer from the University of Hohenheim before accepting his current position at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2025.
Friedrich Sommer emphasizes the importance on the exchange of knowledge between academia and practice. He is actively involved several academia-practice exchange formats, e.g., on management accounting and control as well as on mergers & acquisitions. Additionally, he is a co-initiator of the internationally renowned “Experimental Research in Management Accounting: Summer School and Conference” (EXRIMA, www.exrima.org). His research on incentive and control systems, sustainability, corporate valuation, mergers & acquisitions, and value-based management has received several awards and been published in leading academic journals such as Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Management Accounting Research, European Accounting Review, and Management Accounting Research. He is also dedicated to contributing to practice-oriented journals.
