Shanghai Ranking 2019: FAU once more among the top 50 in two subjects

The 2019 Shanghai Ranking has been published, and FAU is among the world’s top 100 universities in five subjects. Energy Science and Engineering, at 37, and Telecommunication Engineering, at 41, were ranked among the top 50.

National improvement

FAU has improved compared to other German universities. Eleven subjects at FAU have been ranked among the top 10 on a national level, that is four more than the year before. The University is at the top of the national ranking list with Telecommunication Engineering (international: ranked 41), and Energy Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering are both ranked 2nd (international: 37 and 119). Materials Science and Engineering came in at third place (international: 113), whilst Metallurgical Engineering came in at 5th place (international: 59), as did Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (international: 59 and 121).

Further subjects to reach the top 10 were Chemistry (national: 6; international: 89), Mechanical Engineering (6; 120), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (6; 139), Medical Technology (10; 64) and Dentistry and Oral Sciences (10; 138).

The Shanghai Ranking, officially known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities, has been published on an annual basis by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 2003. Universities and a total of 54 individual subjects are assessed on the basis of various indicators during the ranking which focuses on research. Indicators taken into consideration include research publications, citations, Nobel prizes and Fields medals. More than 1,800 universities throughout the world were assessed for the ranking in 2019.
